To begin with, Kedungu Beach is well-known for its surfing. It is located 15 minutes from Canggu and provides ideal waves for learning or improving your surfing skills, with three break points. Kedungu Beach is easily accessible; it’s located at the very end of Jalan Pantai Kedungu, and, like many other places in Bali, admission is 2 000 IDR for scooters and 5 000 IDR for cars. A large parking lot, toilets, showers, and warungs await you to make your visit more comfortable. Kedungu village has a few hotels and restaurants that are open every day.
3 Break Point of Kedungu Beach
The Main Peak
The main peak of Kedungu beach is a consistent A-frame wave directly in front of the shops/warungs. It means that the peak has two surfing directions: left and right. So, whether you’re lefty or regular (right feet in front – left feet in front), you can practice both your front and back side surf skills. It occasionally forms a nice second section that is ideal for longboards. Both waves have a similar steepness, speed, angle, curve, and power. The right one, however, is shorter because it meets the second breakpoint, whereas the left one is longer because it ends up in the channel.
The Front Cliff Peak
Another wave on the left side of the beach, a fast, steep, and powerful left that only works with perfect swell conditions. Only advanced and experienced surfers should attempt this reef wave, which produces barrels in large swell and low tide conditions.
The Beginner Wave
Even if the front cliff peak wave isn’t always clean, its power always creates a second section around 25m from the beach. This new wave creates a long and consistent foam, making it an ideal playground for beginners to learn about the sliding sensation and the power of the ocean.
There’s also the Loloan: the shore break, which is a popular afternoon hangout for locals! This beach break is located in front of the left main peak wave and is a hip-height, short, steep, and powerful wave. This wave is only for advanced and experienced surfers; it creates small barrels, can turn like a face plank on the hard sand of the beach, and ends up on the kook of the day! From mid tide to high tide, the conditions are ideal.
Pangkung Tibah beach can be reached and seen from Kedungu beach. Off the coast, 80m from the beach, you’ll see a short, fat, and fast left wave, also known as PT or MotoCross Kedungu (I’m not sure why some people call it that). This deep wave is heavy and only works during big swell (8ft-12ft). It is only for advanced and fearless surfers.

When to go Surfing
Canggu has surf all year, and when you’re just starting out, you don’t need a big swell. Sure, there will be days when the ocean is completely flat, and the swell will occasionally become too large. But you’ll be able to go most of the time.
Now, the surf spots mentioned above are best at mid tide. Low tide brings you dangerously close to the reefy bottom. High tide makes the waves bigger and more powerful, which you don’t want as a beginner surfer.
In terms of wind, an offshore wind that isn’t too strong is your ideal setup. When the wind blows from the ocean, it causes the wave to break. So, before you go surfing by yourself, check the surf report for tide times, wind direction, and swell size. Mid-tide, with a gentle offshore wind, is the best time for you to surf (marked green in the report). You should also consider the swell size: 5-6 feet may already be too big for you.
