Performance at the Indonesian National Surfing Championship
The Indonesian National Surfing Championships completed yesterday at Pererenan Beach in Bali, with Aceh earning the most medals with five; two gold, two silver, and one bronze, Bali in second place with four medals; two gold, one silver, and one bronze, and West Java with three bronze medals. Bronze medals were also earned by West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, and DKI Jakarta throughout the two-day competition.
68 male and female surfers from 15 surfing provinces in Indonesia, from Aceh to Papua, who are members of the Indonesian surfing sports body, the Indonesian Wave Surfing Association (PSOI), convened to compete for their provinces in four surfing categories. Men’s Shortboard, Women’s Shortboard, Men’s Longboard, and Women’s Longboard compete. The Asian Surf Cooperative and Pererenan Surf Club produce the competition, which is sanctioned by PSOI.
“This is a very special event since it is the first time that so many provinces have brought their surfers together in a tournament like this,” PSOI Chairperson Arya Subyakto remarked. “Previously, only Bali and West Java had elite surfers, but now we see other regions with tremendous surfing potential, such as Aceh, West Nusa Tenggara, and even Jakarta, which doesn’t even have a beach.” It’s encouraging to see surfing expanding and spreading throughout Indonesia… and the government is beginning to encourage this healthy, active sport.
“Our Indonesian surfer Rio Waida was one of 40 surfers in the world who competed in the Olympics last year, and just yesterday he qualified for the World Surf League World Championship Tour for 2023, proving that Indonesia has excellent surfers who can compete and be the best in the world,” he continued.
Made Darmayasa of Bali won the Men’s Shortboard Division and remarked in his acceptance speech, “Many thanks to PSOI for conducting this tournament here in Canggu, and thank you to the colleagues at Pererenan Beach for providing a surfing area for them.” we. Thanks to PSOI Bali, Legian Boardriders, and the judges who appreciated my performance so highly that I earned the Gold Medal!”
Taina Angel Izquierdo of Bali won the Women’s Shortboard Gold Medal, saying, “I am extremely thrilled to win this Gold Medal today and I really want to thank all my sponsors, family, PSOI Bali, and everyone that supports me.” This Gold Medal belongs to all of us… Thank you a lot!”
Chief Jury Wayan Pica was asked for a few thoughts after the award. “I was quite impressed,” Pica remarked, “since I didn’t expect to see performances like this from other provinces at this event.”
“The level of surfing was well above what I expected, which surprised me but made me happy, and I hope that surfing will continue to grow and flourish across Indonesia.” Thank you to all of the provinces and surfers who took part in this event, as well as PSOI and ASC for making it possible.”
