Medewi Beach is a beautiful and idyllic beach with a large number of locals. Medewi surfing has been embraced by both the local and international surfing competitions, and has been featured in international surf competitions.
While the long stretch of black sand and rocky shoreline could be cleaner, it is as picturesque as it is appealing to surfers. Medewi beach Bali has been compared to a bygone era, with secluded, quiet, sleepy villages, gorgeous views, and ultimate relaxation.
What kind of wave is Medewi?
Medewi is reminiscent of Southern California in that it tumbles and crumbles nearly a kilometer down a densely forested black sand left point and beach break. Medewi is a workable wave with a long shoulder that will have goofy footers salivating. While you’re unlikely to spend much time in the barrel, this is easily one of the island’s longer rides.
Don’t be put off by Medewi’s growing popularity; with a 2- to 3-hour drive from Kuta, you’ll be able to avoid crowds and find some solitude. If Medewi is crowded on an off day, the surrounding area is littered with river mouths just waiting to be surfed and explored.

How do you enter and exit the surf?
There are three sections along the break in Medewi beach. Try your luck wading through the cobblestones and looking for a break in the sections where you can get outside. You’re likely to step on a few barnacles attached to the numerous cobbles along the beach, so put on a pair of booties before venturing out. Once outside, the paddle to the point leisurely.
Personally I’d say Medewi is best suited for intermediate and upwards, although higher end beginners will certainly be able to refine their green wave skills on the long walls if the swell isn’t pumping.
A huge advantage that Medewi has over other surf spots in Bali is that it’s also really longboard friendly too – so if you’re looking for some fun walls to tackle on your single fin and get those toes over the nose Medewi is going to be an absolute dream.
Like most spots in the world – once the swell and conditions really pick up make sure you stay within your comfort zone!

Medewi Secret Surf Camp – Lowest price range.
Medewi Secret Surf Camp is a friendly family-run homestay style accommodation located 12 minutes walk from the Medewi Beach. It’s not the best location, but it’s still within walking distance, and if you rent a scooter, as most surfers do, you’re only a minute away from checking the surf and getting wet. If you’re on a tight budget, this is an excellent option for extended stays in Medewi.
Medewi Beach Inn – Affordable price range.
The Medewi Beach Inn provides beachfront lodging with spacious rooms, free wifi, an infinity pool, spa, and dining options. Because Medewi surf is best in the morning before the wind picks up, it’s a good idea to spend the night before your surfing session as close to the break as possible. You won’t find much of a party, but you will meet some of the locals and have some time to relax and enjoy the scenery. In terms of Medewi surf accommodation, The Medewi Beach Inn is a great option that is also very affordable and undoubtedly ensures you have a fantastic stay.
Bombora Medewi Wave Lodge – Mid-Range
At Bombora Medewi Wave Lodge, you’ll undoubtedly find yourself relaxing beachside, by the pool, or in the bar, where you can easily check the surf conditions. Bombora Medewi Wave Lodge, located adjacent to the beach, provides a comfortable and luxurious experience. The Wave Lodge, unlike your typical Medewi surf lodge, offers package experience deals ranging from massages to fishing, trekking to diving. Bombora Medewi Wave Lodge is a step up from your typical surf trip, where you can catch some waves while also relaxing on the Medewi beach.
What to do other than Surfing?
Surfing is unquestionably the most popular attraction in Medewi. There are numerous local businesses that provide boat tours to nearby islands and other recreational activities. A few Hindu temples, such as Pura Rambat Siwi and Pura Perancak, are also within walking distance of town.
This is an excellent location for stretching your legs and taking photos. People watching while exploring the town can be a fun way to spend your time away from the water. I recommend making time to observe Balinese people going about their daily lives.
Where is Medewi?
Medewi beach itself sits on the West Coast of Bali, about halfway along the coast from the airport up to the crossing to neighboring Java. The easiest way to travel to Medewi beach is via a private driver (especially if you have surfboards) and it’ll take you around 2 hours from Canggu (Echo Beach) or 3 hours from the airport.
