Nyang Nyang Beach Surf Guide [Not for Beginners]

Nyang Nyang Beach Surf Guide [Not for Beginners]

South Bali

Nyang Nyang Beach Experience

Though not a great wave by Indonesian standards, Nyang Nyang beach is undoubtedly the most beautiful surf spot on the island and can provide a refreshing change from the usual warung experience. The view from the cliff’s top is breathtaking, and the beach below is inviting. However, there are 600 steps between the cliff’s top and the beach. There are 600 steep steps down and up. This is a great place to work out, but it’s not the place to go for a quick surf.

At Nyang Nyang, there are a few waves. The most popular surfing location is to the right of the beach at the entrance to a channel.

nyang nyang beach

This hollow and fast wave, one of the only rights in the Bukit, must be surfed on higher tides and early mornings. This break is exposed to trade winds, which can be strong beginning in the early afternoon.

Beware of the strong sweeping current while breaking mostly right into the channel. Nyang Nyang beach picks up swell from any direction and performs best during the wet season. This break is only suitable for experienced surfers due to the sharp corral and choppy conditions.

It’s the first place sun-lizard tourists will avoid because it’s hidden beneath the soaring cliffs of the Bukit Peninsula, hidden by dense jungle and cascading rocky drop-offs.
It had no vehicle access just a few years ago. Surfers would scramble down a rocky jungle path, tripping over thongs and lugging boards, sweating and grumbling in the sweltering heat.

There is now a ridiculously steep concrete ‘road’ for scooters with board racks to careen downhill on. However, cars must still park at the top, and the swell cannot be seen from there. A surf check at Nyang Nyang is thus an agreement to take a chance and surf whatever Bali’s southwestern point has to offer.
