Echo Beach was originally known as Pantai Batu Mejan, after the nearby Hindu temple Pura Batu Mejan. Although its black sand beach is not one of the most beautiful in Bali, Echo Beach has grown in popularity due to its advanced reef breaks, stunning 180-degree sea view, and beautiful sunsets.
The beach is mostly clean thanks to the collaborative efforts of various surf schools and beach bars along Canggu’s coast, which perform routine beach clean-ups.
What kind of waves can be found at Echo Beach Left?
With a good swell, Echo Beach Left breaks hard and often heavy over a shallow reef. It is known to barrel and jack up as the wave hits the reef. This is not for the inexperienced surfer. On a good day, surfers will slot in for a quick but nuggety barrel.
When the tide isn’t barreling, Echo Beach Left provides a grunty wall to rip turns and a lip to smack. This wave is popular among natural footers on the backhand and goofy footers on the forehand.

Most Common Hazard
There are a few surfing spots in the Canggu area, some of which are well-known for their exposed reefs, including Echo Beach. If you don’t make the drop, Canggu tends to break shallow over the reef, making it easy to hit the uneven bottom. Although you will see many local pros throwing epic airs on the inside, there are uneven chunks of reef here that you should be cautious of, so if you are a long way from fine-tuning your aerials, save them for somewhere else.
There is a lot of exposed, uneven, and sharp rereefsn Echo Beach Left. Take a good look at the reef during a super low tide to get the idea. The take-off zone is small and always crowded, making it difficult to catch a good wave.
How do you enter and exit the surf?
Use the channels to avoid being washed up on the inside if you’re going to surf The Sandbar or the reefs at Echo Beach Left or Canggu. Keep an eye out for boils on lower tides as you paddle. This usually refers to rocks in the water that can easily ding your board or fins. You can paddle out anywhere at Old Man’s, whether through the breakers on small days or through the channel to the right if the swell is up.
How do Batu Bolong and Echo Beach in Canggu compare?
Canggu, like many other beaches in the area, is distinguished by a long stretch of beautiful black sand. At dusk, you’ll see a lot of people enjoying the sunset and Bintangs at the various beach bars that line Echo Beach and Batu Bolong Beach all the way down to Berawa. Frii Hotel is a bit more luxurious than some of the other Canggu surf accommodations on this list, and is ideal for a couple looking for seclusion or a family looking for a quiet place to stay. If you want to mix things up, there’s also a free shuttle to and from Seminyak.

Set on lovely grounds with stunning Balinese art and architecture. The Tugu Hotel in Canggu offers a peaceful and serene atmosphere beside the ocean to help you escape the hustle and bustle of the outside world. While it is well beyond the majority of surfers’ accommodation budgets, it can be a nice place to spend a couple of days if you want to splurge and relax in the comforts of a top hotel with fantastic staff. It is difficult to find a dissatisfied traveller among the hundreds of glowing reviews on Tripadvisor.
Where is Echo Beach?
Echo Beach Bali is located at the end of Jl. Pura Batu Mejan directly in front of Echo Beach Club and La Brisa.
The beach can be reached by descending a few steps to the right of the gate. Parasols and colorful beanbags are set up 100 meters along the coastline on low-lying rocks for chill-out sessions. It is approximately 35 kilometers west of North Kuta and Seminyak, and 14 kilometers west of Denpasar, the provincial capital. It is walkable from Batu Bolong’s main street for those staying in Canggu. Parking a scooter costs 2000 IDR.
